I write domestic suspense. The bad people in my books are philanderers and emotional abusers, financial manipulators, unreliable narrators with horrific back stories and, in general, people who play fast and loose with the rules. As a helicopter mom of two young kids, I'm kind of a stickler for rules. So how do I write these characters? 

One way is through emotional substitution. I try to get into the feelings driving a character's actions by thinking of a time that I have felt similarly, albeit not to the same degree. Clouds loomed over the ocean, a gathering black mass in the darkening evening that gradually assumed the shape of a ghostly pirate ship moored to the horizon. Light crackled in the dense fog like the flash of light before cannon fire. The expected blasts never sounded. The squall, visible as day over the dark, still water, was still too far away for thunder. Lightening can be seen for fifty miles or more, though. Whatever your politics, it's kind of impossible to argue that Michelle Obama didn't give a fantastic speech at Monday night's Democratic Convention. It was a master class on that favorite writing mantra: show don't tell. 

The first lady didn't start her speech by telling people her opinion on what is wrong with America or what is right with it. She didn't quote somebody else's idea as a springboard to launch into her own political philosophies. Instead, she told a story with which every parent, arguably every person, can relate.
